PokaTheme 5.0.0 came out on 15 September 2026. It is the largest release the theme has had, and most of it answers one question: what does a casino affiliate site need from its theme in 2026 that v4 could not give it?
It is also an upgrade in place. Your reviews, categories, menus, Customizer settings and content stay where they are, and nothing from v4 is deleted or renamed.
Bonuses are real records now
In v4 an operator’s bonus was a line of text on the review. In v5 a Bonus is its own record, with the fields a bonus actually has:
- headline value and promo code
- wagering, minimum deposit and maximum cashout
- valid-from and expiry dates
- terms, its own CTA label and its own tracking link
Three new blocks show them, Single Bonus, Bonus List and Bonus Table, each with a matching shortcode. Bonus types such as no deposit, free spins or cashback get their own archive at /bonus-type/<slug>/, and expired offers are flagged in the admin and kept out of archives unless you ask for them.
Eight kinds of page v4 did not have
Each one is a distinct URL you can rank, and each appears as soon as there is content behind it:
- Payment method pages at
/payment/<slug>/: deposit and withdrawal times, minimums, fees, and the operators that accept each method - Country landing pages at
/casinos-in/<country>/, driven by the per-post country rules the geolocation engine already reads - Head-to-head comparisons at
/vs/<a>-vs-<b>/, from operator relationships you set yourself - Software and provider pages at
/software/<slug>/ - Author profiles with credentials, tenure and verification links
- “How we rate” and responsible gambling pages, each with a pattern to start from
- Bonus-type archives, above
Nine operator taxonomies, and licence badges people can check
Licence, software, deposit method, withdrawal method, language, currency, device, operator group and bonus type. Every one is a filter on a listing and an archive of its own.
Licence terms carry a badge image and a link to the regulator’s own register, so a badge is something a visitor can check rather than a picture of a logo.
Verification and freshness
A review can record the date it was last verified, whether a deposit was tested, the withdrawal time observed and who tested it. The theme turns these into a verification line on the review and links it to your “How we rate” page.
Tools → PokaTheme freshness lists what has gone stale: bonuses after 7 days, listicles after 120, and expired bonuses whatever their date.
Compliance profiles
Pick a market (Generic, United Kingdom, Malta, Ontario, Sweden, or none) and the theme adds that market’s furniture: an age statement, the affiliate disclosure, rel="sponsored" on paid links, a responsible-gambling link, the licence on a review, and an editor warning when a bonus value is published without terms beside it. Every switch can be overridden, and the age is a field, because it is 18 in most markets, 19 in Ontario and 21 in several US states.
This is tooling, not legal advice. Whether what it renders is what your market requires is for whoever signs off your compliance to decide.
Dark mode, styles and patterns
- Dark mode is a real switch in the header, per visitor, over the same content. It stays off until you turn it on, so updating does not change how your site looks.
- Style variations set the look of the whole site in one click, and any colour you chose yourself keeps winning. 5.0.0 shipped four; 5.0.1 brought it to eight.
- 37 block patterns: eleven universal sections plus three for each of eight markets (casino, sportsbook, crypto, poker, slots, esports, forex and VPN). They are built on blocks that query, so a listing pattern shows your own operators the moment you insert it.
- Block bindings put an operator’s rating, bonus value, licence or verification date into ordinary Heading and Paragraph blocks, styled with the normal block controls. This needs WordPress 6.5 or later.
Faster
- No jQuery on the front end: 42.7 KB gzipped off every page. How we did that without breaking existing sites is a story of its own.
- Per-component CSS: seven components load only on pages that use them, and
bundle.min.cssis 18.6% smaller. - Native WebP, and responsive images that actually ship:
srcset, sizes, decodingandfetchpriorityhad been stripped in 183 places. - Reserved dimensions on logos, tables and thumbnails, so nothing jumps while a page loads.
Each of our three test pages scores 100 in Lighthouse on mobile (best of three runs), with the largest content painted in 1.5 to 1.9 seconds. Every release is also checked against a page-weight budget, so a library that creeps back in fails the build.
Safer
These were live on v4 sites until this release, and 5.0 fixes them:
- an SQL injection and two XSS issues found in a September 2026 audit
- geolocation settings that any logged-in user could rewrite, with no capability check and no nonce
- a metabox framework that never sanitised what it saved
- a public AJAX endpoint that would render every published post in a single request
Two bugs that lost data are fixed too: the geolocation metabox deleted its own settings on every autosave, and Quick Edit wiped every custom field on a review.
Upgrading a v4 site
- Back up the site, files and database.
- Update through Appearance → Themes by uploading the new theme. Do not overwrite the theme folder over FTP on a live site: going through WordPress puts the site in maintenance mode for the length of the swap.
- On the first admin page you open after the update, the theme checks your child theme for jQuery code, turns jQuery back on if it finds any, and tells you what it found.
- Run Tools → PokaTheme v5 when you are ready. It reports what it would do before it touches anything, works in batches of 25, creates every bonus as a draft and deletes nothing, so your v4 bonus text stays where it is until you decide. Running it twice is safe, and there is no deadline.
We rehearsed the upgrade on three real v4 sites, one of them with 38,855 game posts. Every page answered, no CSS custom property changed value on any of them, and all 42 reviews migrated cleanly.
The step-by-step version is in the documentation, and the FAQ answers the usual questions. Rather not do it yourself? If you already own PokaTheme, we run the upgrade for you for free. Ask us.
